Anti-Valentine’s Day: a playlist
Cozy up this Valentine’s Day with friendship and solitude with a playlist curated by one of Hot Knife’s contributing editors, Eve Rosenblum.
Time to stop searching for love and start loving yourself. After all, all relationships end in breakup, divorce, or death. Then what do you have?
“Goodbye to Love” — The Carpenters
All the years of useless search and I’m throwing in the towel. Somehow Karen Carpenter’s vocals make it a little less sad. Physically alone but mentally in 1972.
“When I’m Sixty Four” — The Beatles
My Dad played my sister and I this song on the old cassette player. It was a funny song then. Now the possibility of losing my hair seems close. What a great reason to focus on friendship. In all honesty, I do think it’s a great reminder of the sacredness of time with friends.
“Where You Lead” — Carole King
Another great song about the lengths friends will go to for one another. If you think it’s about partners - you’re wrong.
“History” — One Direction
An nostalgic whiff of A Thousand Wishes.
“Tears Dry On Their Own” — Amy Winehouse
Amy argues healing doesn’t require any one else. Closure is a one-way street.
“Miami” — Cate Le Bon
This song’s just beautiful. Enjoy the siren call of Cate Le Bon.
La bohème, SC 67: “Che gelida manina”
If you aren’t transported to the Italian countryside, listen again. The great thing about Italian music if you don’t speak Italian is the great thing about classical music. Ideas are exhausting.
“Mexican Wine” — Fountains of Wayne
As a great woman once said “Without music life would be a mistake.”
